What's Actually in Season in Melbourne

Everyone says "buy seasonal", but almost nobody tells you what that means in a Melbourne spring versus a Melbourne winter. Daniel spent a year tracking what we actually pull off the Epping market truck, month by month, and wrote it all down: which stems are cheap and gorgeous right now, which ones quietly disappoint, and why the peony window is shorter than Instagram wants you to believe.

If you read one thing on this page before ordering flowers, make it this one. It'll save you money and a few sad stems.

Six stories from the studio floor

Care advice, gifting guides and behind-the-scenes: everything below was written by the same hands that tie the bouquets.

New pieces land roughly every two weeks, usually on a slow Tuesday afternoon.

How to Keep a Bouquet Alive for Ten Days

Most bouquets die of thirst, not age. Priya shares the exact routine we use in the studio, plus the two mistakes that quietly kill flowers in the first 48 hours.

Why we write this

Notes from people who actually touch the flowers

We got tired of flower advice written by people who've never stripped thorns off a rose at 6am. So the journal is us: the tips we give customers over the counter, the mistakes we see at the market, the small wins on the bench. If a tip doesn't work in our studio, it doesn't make the page.

"If we wouldn't tell you this across the counter, it doesn't go in the journal."
— Priya Nair, co-founder

Three tips you can use today

  • Trim stems at 45° under running water, never with blunt kitchen scissors
  • Keep bouquets away from fruit bowls; ripening fruit ages flowers fast
  • Change the water every second day (a quick top-up doesn't count)

Journal FAQ

The things readers ask us most: about the writing, the advice and how it connects to what we sell. Anything else, just ask.

Ask us directly

Our florists, between orders. Priya handles the care and gifting guides; Daniel covers seasons, natives and weddings. No ghostwriters, no content agency. If a tip is on the page, one of us has done it on the bench this week.

Slightly, yes. Natives like banksias and gum prefer shallower water and hate being over-handled. The general routine in our care guide covers roses and soft stems; for natives, read the dedicated guide; the difference is a few minutes and a lot of extra vase life.

Please do. Some of our best pieces started as a customer question at the counter. Send it through our contacts page and if it's something we can answer honestly, it goes on the list. We credit the question (anonymously) if we use it.

Most of them, yes, though seasonal pieces depend on what the market gives us that week. The signature bouquet design service is the closest thing to "order what you read about": tell us the article, we'll build in that spirit with the freshest stems available.

Roughly every two weeks, usually on a quieter Tuesday. We'd rather publish six solid pieces a year than filler every week. The seasonal guide gets updated monthly, though, because the market genuinely changes that fast.

One small favour

If a guide here saved your bouquet, tell us. Or better, send the article to the friend who keeps killing their flowers. We write for exactly that person.
